Spurs Expected to Sign Steve Novak

Steve Novak is expected to be called-up by the San Antonio Spurs after playing just two games in the NBA D-League with the Reno Bighorns, FanHouse has confirmed. Novak's promotion was first reported by DraftExpress' Jonathan Givony on Twitter. Novak, a 6-foot-10 shooting specialist, began this season with the Dallas Mavericks where he played in just seven games before being released on January 5. In lieu of going overseas, Novak elected to stick around and play in the D-League with the goal of returning to the NBA after spending the last four seasons with the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers. It worked, obviously. In just two games -- playing in an NBA system under former Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors head coach Eric Musselman -- Novak averaged 18.5 points and 6.5 rebounds while making 9 of his 14 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc. Though Novak probably wasn't in Reno long enough to establish lasting bonds with his teammates, it does strike me as a bit interesting that the Spurs elected to bring aboard the big man instead of former Spur -- and current Bighorn -- Danny Green. Green, known for his shooting as well as his defense, is averaging 16.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists while shooting 41 percent from 3-point territory in eight games played in the D-League. The Spurs needed to sign another player after letting Tulsa 66ers forward Larry Owens head back to the D-League upon completion of his second 10-day contract, leaving them with just 12 players on the roster. In seven games with the Spurs, Owens averaged 1.3 points in 4.4 minutes played over the course of seven games.
