Justin Bieber tied with Eminem as the top winner at Sunday night's Billboard Music Awards with six trophies. But it was his embrace of reported sweetie Selena Gomez that set the Internet on fire after a night that saw splashy performances from Rihanna, an upside-down Cee Lo Green, Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha, Mary J. Blige with Lil Wayne, Taio Cruz, the Black Eyed Peas and Pitbull.
Bieber's awards included trophies for Top New Artist, Top Social Artist, Top Streaming Artist, Top Digital Media Artist, Top Pop Album and Top Streaming Song at his first-ever trip to the show. Meanwhile, veteran Eminem (who was not in Las Vegas for the show) nabbed Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Rap Artist, Top Rap Song and Top Rap Album for his smash comeback, Recovery.
Six artists were just behind with three wins each, including Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Usher, Mumford & Sons and Cruz. Though Bieber and Gomez have kept their relationship under wraps for months, the "Baby" singer kissed and hugged Gomez before taking the stage to accept an award.
The show featured a number of performances, two of which included surprise appearances from a lip-synching Britney Spears. The pop diva literally popped up out of the floor to join Rihanna for "S&M," writhing on a stripper pole while brandishing a pair of diamond handcuffs. The two finished things off with a pillow fight and a kiss. She also topped off a performance of Minaj's "Super Bass" with a bit of her own "Till the World Ends."
Weezy teamed up with Blige for the remix of "Someone to Love Me (Naked)." Green wore a sparkly outer-space outfit while playing piano and singing a medley of his hits ("Crazy," "Bright Lights Bigger City" and "Forget You"); he levitated over the stage and pounded the keys of his silver piano while hanging upside down at one point.
But perhaps the biggest moment of the night was when Beyoncé was presented with the prestigious Billboard Millennium Award, which was preceded by a video honoring her with testimonials from First Lady Michelle Obama, Bono, Lady Gaga, Bey's parents and sister Solange, Stevie Wonder, The-Dream and Barbra Streisand.
She accepted the award after an eye-popping performance of her new single, "Run the World (Girls)," which was highlighted by a breathtaking digital background featuring a shifting array of effects that produced a legion of virtual backup dancers and CGI-like movie effects.
Out of breath from her performance, Beyoncé thanked her mother and father for teaching her about hard work, as well as former Destiny's Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, past DC members and, in a break with their usual low-key nature, husband Jay-Z.
"I'd also like to thank my best friend, and I don't want to put you on the spot because I know they're probably putting a camera in your face right now, but I love me some Jay-Z," she said with a smile.
A number of artists also took home two awards apiece, including Katy Perry, Shakira and Train.

"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" may have been the big winner at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday night, but when it came to drawing people to theaters over the weekend, no film beat "X-Men: First Class." The superhero reboot/prequel came in first in the latest box-office tally with a $56 million debut. And while the mutant movie's estimated opening is the worst of the franchise, "First Class" bears the distinction of being the best-reviewed "X-Men" flick since 2003's "X2: X-Men United."
While the first "X-Men" movie took in less than "First Class" when it debuted in 2000, with adjustments for ticket-price inflation it fared better than the new film. Eighty-eight percent of critics liked "X-Men: First Class," according to film-review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" (aka "X-Men 4"), in comparison, sits at 37 percent on the Tomatometer.
In non-mutant movie news, "The Hangover Part II" fell from the top spot to #2 at the box office in its second weekend of release, while suffering a sharp 62-percent decline (much greater than its predecessor). The poorly reviewed comedy sequel took in $32.4 million, for an overall $186.8 million total. "Kung Fu Panda 2" was #3 at the box office with $18 million, for a two-week total of $100 million. Johnny Depp's "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" was #4 with $18 million, for a $190.2 million total.
"Bridesmaids," the only movie in the top five that isn't a sequel, crossed the $100 million mark. The female-ensemble-led comedy made $12.1 million over the weekend to bring its total earnings to $107.2 million. "Fast Five," meanwhile, crossed the $200 million domestic box-office mark.
Welsh coming-of-age story "Submarine," tragic drama "Beautiful Boy" and Ewan McGregor's "Beginners" opened in limited release. Next weekend's big new release is JJ Abrams' "Super 8."
Check out everything we've got on "X-Men: First Class," "The Hangover Part II" and "Kung Fu Panda 2."

When the new season of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" kicks off this weekend, fans will get to witness the courtship between Kim and her basketballer fiancé Kris Humphries. Sisters Khloé and Kourtney spoke to MTV News about Kim's very surprising impending nuptials, admitting that they didn't see it coming.
"Mine was insanity in the best way ever," Khloé said of her quickie engagement to Lamar Odom. "But [with] Kim's, we were totally surprised. I mean, because I had been working so much, and Kris lives in New Jersey, I've only met him not even a handful of times.
"We were at a family dinner and she walks in, and she's like, 'I'm engaged,' but we didn't even know if it was a joke," Khloe added.
Kourtney was also caught off-guard. "We were like, 'Is this for real? What's going on?' " she said. "We were definitely all surprised. I had even just been on a vacation with them and was still really surprised."
As with most major moments in the Kardashians' lives, the romance was all taped, so maybe when we see the whole story, their decision to get married won't seem so sudden.
"But that's the cool thing about this whole season: You do get to see Kim [and Kris] kind of from the beginning of the relationship to the engagement," Khloé said. "Obviously, no one knew in between what was going to happen, so it's cool that they have it documented for their future."
