David Fay Retiring as Head of USGA

David Fay has decided to retire from the U.S. Golf Association after 21 years as the executive director, leaving behind a legacy that includes his successful push to stage the U.S. Open on golf courses where everyone can play.

Fay turned 60 two months ago and said Friday that the USGA was in a good place for him to leave. Mike Butz, the deputy executive director, will take over until the USGA can conduct a national search for Fay's replacement.

Never afraid to take chances, Fay was behind bringing the U.S. Open to Bethpage Black in New York in 2002. It was such a big success that it returned in 2009, along with going to another public course at Torrey Pines in 2008.

Fay also suggested staging the men's and women's U.S. Open a week apart on the same course, at Pinehurst No. 2 in 2014.

Lady Gaga To Unveil Polaroid 'Grey Label' Project At CES

Pop star's collaboration with the instant-camera maker will be revealed Thursday.

Nearly a year ago, when Lady Gaga announced that she had signed on as a creative director with Polaroid, the singer told fans she'd already begun work on a series of "prototypes in the vein of fashion/technology/photography innovation." This Thursday, we'll finally get to see the fruits of her labor.

That's when Polaroid will unveil their so-called "Grey Label," the end result of — as the company puts it in a statement — "a collaboration between two of the most influential icons of our time: Polaroid and Lady Gaga." The launch will happen at the massive Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but little monsters can also watch it unfold live on Polaroid.com at 3:30 p.m. PT.

Of course, it's not exactly clear what Polaroid's Grey Label will actually entail (the former instant-camera giant says it will be "the next generation instant experience"), but there's already a fancy website dedicated to the project, complete with a clock counting down to the big reveal.

Gaga isn't speaking about the project either (she's probably too busy unveiling pertinent information about her upcoming Born This Way album — and her backside — on Twitter, but in April, she held a creative meeting with Polaroid in Tokyo, in which she apparently wowed her new corporate partners with her ideas.

"It's very clear from our first few sessions that she is a creative tour-de-force, and a key player on the Polaroid team. ... The partnership is all channeling Lady Gaga's fashion sense to create innovative products with her fans in mind," a post on Polaroid's website read last year. "The collaboration will deliver new products that mix the best of 'instant' with digital era multi-media. Lady Gaga has a personal connection to the Polaroid experience that she wants to share with the world through the introduction of products that will appeal to a new generation."

The Works: How LeBron James Destroyed the MVP Award

Today in The Works: Making sense of the NBA's Christmas ratings; assessing some major player disappointments. Then, Eric and Shoals debate the Thunder's supposed stat-padding.

But first, how LeBron James completely and totally exposed the MVP award for the heaping lie it is.

Be A Selfish Jerk, You Jerk!

LeBron JamesOver the weekend, LeBron James stated (quite reasonably, I thought) that neither he nor Dwyane Wade had a shot at the MVP this season. This is pretty much consistent with the critique of the Heat: by coming together to form a three-headed monster of superstar-dom, James, Wade and Chris Bosh forfeited their dignity, or at least their individuality. The MVP, while not quite an award about individuals -- it's individuals winning, or making their teammates better -- at least requires they be held up as a single man on a single trophy.

The Heat benefit from the unfair advantage of All-World teammates. In theory, this means there is always less pressure on them than on other candidates for the award, and that in the end, they just don't have to try as hard, or stand as tall. There is no room for ego or the individual will, since on this team, those dark forces would quickly scuttle the entire experiment. As James surmised, the team is MVP-proof -- this despite the fact that, in the preseason, he topped many writers' lists of predictions. A team premised on balance and sharing is not conducive to handing out MVPs, even as the award is not supposed to be about one man's accomplishments.

It brings us back to the perennial question: what exactly is the MVP? And, if the Heat are cowards, are we to understand the individualism of the MVP as somehow more honorable?

Jay-Z is letting fans into his world with two major releases this month. He just published his book, "Decoded," in which he takes a closer look at his career, and on Monday (November 22), Hova is releasing a greatest-hits album, The Hits Collection, Volume 1.

The album features Jay's most memorable tunes, including "Big Pimpin'," "Hard Knock Life," "99 Problems" and his collabo with his superstar wife, Beyoncé, "03' Bonnie & Clyde."

But when MTV News caught up with Bey Sunday at a New York screening for her DVD concert special, "I Am ... World Tour," she admitted that "Bonnie & Clyde" isn't her favorite Jay-Z track.

"God, that's not my favorite, even though I like it," she laughed. "I can't tell you which one is my favorite. It's just too many. You're putting me on the spot!"

While the pair may be releasing fresh products at the same time, the singer insists there is no competition in the Carter-Knowles household.

"No absolutely not, [there is no competition]," she told reporters at the DVD event, going on to praise "Decoded." "That book is unbelievable, and I think we're all really proud of it. And this DVD [out this] Thanksgiving — it's the holiday season of everyone's [material] coming out."

The DVD shows a new, more intimate side of the usually private Beyoncé, and Jay-Z admits that his book also sheds new light on his persona and career. "A lot of people listen to music, but they don't really listen to it," he explained. "You may know the words and you may bop your head to it, but you don't really understand what you're singing."

Open the floodgates! It's Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums. Stick with MTV News for everything you need to know about the brand-new music.

2011 NHL All-Star Fan Vote Includes Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews

The NHL has drastically changed the format for its All-Star Game this year, hoping to increase interest in the event, scheduled for Jan. 30 in Raleigh, N.C.

Tuesday, the league announced the six highest vote-getters in its annual All-Star Fan Balloting. The list is comprised of three forwards, two defensemen, and one goalie.

More than 14.3 million votes were cast, and it's no surprise that Pittsburgh star Sidney Crosby was the top vote-getter, receiving over 600,000 votes. Joining him at forward is teammate Evgeni Malkin, who was third among forwards in voting. Chicago captain Jonathan Toews was second, more than 200,000 tallies behind Crosby.

Unlike the multitude of stars descending upon Las Vegas, Miami and New York City on Friday to celebrate New Year's Eve, there are a few who will be keeping a much lower profile as they ring in 2011. Like 2010 superstar Justin Bieber, for example, who said recently that his big plans consist of him getting some much-needed rest and spending time with his family.

"For New Year's, I'm just hanging out," Bieber told MTV News last week. "I'm just going to be with my family. Just being with them and relaxing, because I've been go, go, go for the past three years."

Judging from his recent tweets, the 16-year-old phenom is making good on his plans so far.

"Another solid day hanging with the family and friends. love the #holidays," he wrote on Monday. "New years is coming....what is gonna be your new years resolution?" Then yesterday, he tweeted a message focused on R&R: "Need the rest. #grateful."

The soon-to-be big-screen star (his film debut, "Never Say Never," opens in February) later commented that he's grateful for everything, from his success to all the rumors about his love life.

"Chillin and happy. It's been a fun year with a lot of blessings," Bieber wrote on Twitter. "Some crazy rumors but so much love and memories. We r just gettin started!! So enjoy the holidays. Get crazy and have some laughs. Life is too short. At least that is what they tell me. #newyearsIsComin"

What are your plans for New Year's Eve? Big blowout or low-key evening in? Tell us in the comments!
