Mark Wilson Survives Marathon Day to Win Sony Open

Filed under:

HONOLULU (AP) -- Mark Wilson made it through a 36-hole marathon Sunday without a bogey and held on for a two-shot victory in the Sony Open that will take him to the Masters for the first time.

Wilson shot a 5-under 65 in the morning to take a one-shot lead into the afternoon round. He stretched his lead to four shots at the turn, then had to hang on when Tim Clark and Steve Marino made late runs on different sides of Waialae.

Clark, who started the final round five shots behind, birdied three of his last four holes. He narrowly missed an eagle putt on the ninth hole and settled for a 64. Then came Marino with two late birdies and one incredible shot that at least gave him hope.

Two shots behind on the par-5 18th, with his feet in the bunker and his ball about chest-high on the side of a hill, Marino blasted a fairway metal from 234 yards away that landed on the front of the green and rolled 40 feet away. His eagle putt narrowly missed, giving him a 68.

Wilson made one last birdie he didn't need, giving him a 67 for his third career victory.

"It was nice to go right to the tee and not have to think about it," Wilson said of having only a few minutes before the third and fourth rounds. "I'm thankful it's over now."

Wilson, who finished at 16-under 264, played his final 40 holes without a bogey. That proved significant at a couple of points in the final round. He got into trouble on the eighth hole and was 150 yards out in the fairway playing his third shot, sure to lose some of his two-shot lead. But he stuffed it to 7 feet for par, then birdied the ninth to expand his lead to four.

Even bigger was his par on the 17th, even though Wilson didn't realize it.

Justin Bieber will make a surprise appearance on the feel-good ABC show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" on Sunday. In the episode, the singer meets the Brown family of Wellman, Texas, who are helping raise awareness about the dangers of texting and driving after their eldest daughter Alex was affected by it.

The episode was shot back in November, according to AceShowbiz.com, and in it, Bieber not only pledges to give back to the cause, but also makes daughter Katrina Brown and her friends' day with some one-on-one time.

"So I'm really glad you guys can come. Every night we have a banner that goes up and it says 'don't text and drive' so every night all these kids see it so it definitely means a lot to me as well," he told the family. "We're gonna give $1 from every ticket sold to your cause. I always do this sound-check party and I wanted to invite you guys to come and hang out."

"I did not know what to do," Katrina admits in the preview clip for the two-hour episode, which also features Emma Roberts and NASCAR drivers Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle. "I did not know how to react."

Bieber also opens up a bit more about joining the cause. "It's been a big part of my life to influence others not to text and drive," he explained. "And every night when I perform, I have a video that comes up and it says 'don't text and drive' and it's me driving. It's just really important to me."

The encounter will also reportedly be featured in Bieber's upcoming 3-D flick, "Never Say Never." In a trailer released earlier this month, Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, opened up about how lucky he feels. "Me and the guy from 'Extreme Home Makeover' have the best jobs in the world," Braun explains in the new clip. "It's actually the most gratifying thing about the job. Little things go a very long way. You get paid to just make other people happy."

Bieber isn't the only pop star who works with the cause. The Jonas Brothers are also avid spokesmen for Allstate's "X the Text" campaign. "We're a part of the X the Text campaign with our sponsor Allstate, which is an amazing thing," Kevin Jonas told MTV News back in August. "So many teen drivers and drivers out there have accidents texting while driving, and it's such a [great] thing to bring awareness to this."

Steven Tyler's Best 'American Idol' Quotes From Milwaukee

'Slap that baby on the ass and call me Christmas!' new judge says after one surprising audition.

In addition to the excitement and anticipation that is involved in watching the audition rounds of "American Idol," the unexpected remarks that come out of new judge Steven Tyler's mouth are quickly becoming just as (if not more) entertaining to listen to as the contestants' vocal stylings.

We weren't sure Tyler could top last week's performance, but mere minutes into Wednesday's (January 26) episode (after opening the show singing an a cappella "Idol" version of "Sweet Emotion" with Randy Jackson), we knew we were in for another night of Tyler treats. Here are our favorites from the Milwaukee auditions:

» "Slap that baby on the ass and call me Christmas!" Tyler exclaimed after hearing Scotty McCreery's deep-voice rendition of Josh Turner's "Your Man."

» "Well hellfire, save matches, f--- a duck and see what hatches!"

» "You got a certain something. I can't put my finger on it right now, but it's got a lot of character."

» "Dawg is going to turn into a pussycat right now," he said about Jackson, who was debating whether to send a sensitive 15-year-old hopeful through to Hollywood.

» "You could call me 'late for dinner' and I'd still love you," Tyler told Jennifer Lopez after she called him "Steve" and he asked to be called "Steven." "But not lunch."

» After Randy said auditioner Jerome Bell had "all of the isms jumping off," Steven responded, "And none of the 'wasms.' "

» "I found you to be disturbingly great," Tyler said of 27-year-old accountant Steve Beghun. "Weird, compelling, great. Really different."

» "I've never heard anybody squeeze that song, but you squeezed it so slow it sounded like Vanilla Fudge singing 'Eleanor Rigby,' " Tyler told Obama impressionist Albert Rogers.

» "I might be colorblind, but unless you borrowed my lipstick, is that your real lips?" he asked student teacher Scott Dangerfield.

» "Well, you look like you could be one of my ... nope, not gonna say it," he told contestant Alyson Jados, either censoring himself from saying something dirty or maybe suggesting she looked like one of his daughters. Instead, Tyler said, "Friends. [You look like you could be] one of my friends."

Beyonce's Mom Says Daughter's Style Has Always Been 'Edgy'

'It's just a result of her constantly evolving,' Tina Knowles says of the fashion in Beyonce's "I Am ... World Tour" DVD concert special.

Beyoncé has never been shy about hitting the stage in stunning costumes. Her appearance has always been a mixture of showgirl sparkle and pop star razzle-dazzle. And her style is on full display in her new DVD concert special, "I Am ... World Tour."

Her mom and stylist, Tina Knowles, said that while the looks may seem a bit edgier than what fans have seen from the singer in the past, she thinks that her superstar daughter has always been ahead of the style curve.

"Well, the wonderful Thierry Mugler designed the costumes, and I actually worked on some of the dancers and the band, and it was just amazing to work with him because he is so creative," Knowles told MTV News at a New York screening of the special. "So it's just a result of her constantly evolving, but she's been edgy. It's funny for people to say she went more edgy, but she's been wearing body suits and that type of thing."

And while Knowles may act as her daughter's stylist and costume designer, she says that Bey's style decisions are all her own. "Well, we discussed her working with Thierry Mugler, and I'm the biggest fan. And so she had seen some of the fashions and she loved it," she said. "So we always discuss things, but it's her decision, it's her career."

Beyoncé, who also directed the concert special , said it gave her a better understanding of the filmmaking process. "It was hard work," she said. "I learned so much. I have a new respect for directors and I think I would like to do more of it. ... Well, I've done some co-directing for music videos [but] this was definitely a big step for me, and I'm so thrilled."

Saku Koivu Will Feel the Love in Montreal

Saku Koivu admits to being nervous about making his first return to Montreal's Bell Centre on Saturday for the first time since moving West and signing a two-year deal with the Anaheim Ducks.

"I used that facility for so long and it's a very familiar place but now being on the visiting team, an opponent, it's going to feel very weird." Koivu said during a stop in Toronto where the Ducks played the Maple Leafs.

There are Habs fans that still have not forgiven the Canadiens management for not keeping the popular Koivu in the fold two years ago when he became an unrestricted free agent.
