J.R. Smith Wants to Move on From Latest Incident, Stay in Denver

J.R. SmithDENVER -- What is it with guys named J.R.? J.R. Rider always had negatives surface during his playing days, although it continued after he started calling himself Isaiah.

J.R. Smith also has had plenty of negatives during his seven-year career. He did flirt last season with being known by his given name of Earl Smith Jr., perhaps thinking that might soften some headlines, but he soon abandoned that idea.

"For me, it was just more or less people were looking at it as, 'Well, that's just J.R. being J.R.,''' the Denver guard said Monday about his flagrant foul 2 last Friday against Utah that got him a $25,000 fine Saturday. "That's my first ever flagrant 2.''

Smith said he likely won't appeal the fine and that he has "no beef'' with Jazz guard Deron Williams, who shoved Smith and got a technical and later said Smith made a "dirty play.'' He's just looking to move on, and that definitely doesn't have anything to do with moving on from the Nuggets.

Smith's name still has come up in rumors as the Feb. 24 trade deadline approaches. That is despite Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri having told FanHouse before the season he is confident Smith will last the season with the team and despite Ujiri and Smith both telling FanHouse in December the desire is for Smith to re-sign with the Nuggets this summer.

Smith, making a base salary this season of $6.03 million, is due to become a free agent July 1, although any progress then could be delayed by what happens due to the collective bargaining agreement expiring June 30. He told FanHouse on Monday nothing has changed from his end in wanting to remain long-term in Denver.

Al Horford, Josh Smith Don't Think Blake Griffin Foul Was Excessive

If you missed it Friday night, Blake Griffin sent Al Horford to the deck with a hard foul in the closing seconds of what would turn out to be a 101-100 win for the Hawks. Horford was on his way to the basket for the game tying points when Blake Griffin determined he would make Atlanta's All-Star center earn the win at the line.

This is all a very bland way of saying what Matt Moore said much more colorfully over at Pro Basketball Talk:

Spurs Expected to Sign Steve Novak

Steve NovakSteve Novak is expected to be called-up by the San Antonio Spurs after playing just two games in the NBA D-League with the Reno Bighorns, FanHouse has confirmed.

Novak's promotion was first reported by DraftExpress' Jonathan Givony on Twitter.

Novak, a 6-foot-10 shooting specialist, began this season with the Dallas Mavericks where he played in just seven games before being released on January 5. In lieu of going overseas, Novak elected to stick around and play in the D-League with the goal of returning to the NBA after spending the last four seasons with the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers.

It worked, obviously.

In just two games -- playing in an NBA system under former Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors head coach Eric Musselman -- Novak averaged 18.5 points and 6.5 rebounds while making 9 of his 14 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc.

Though Novak probably wasn't in Reno long enough to establish lasting bonds with his teammates, it does strike me as a bit interesting that the Spurs elected to bring aboard the big man instead of former Spur -- and current Bighorn -- Danny Green. Green, known for his shooting as well as his defense, is averaging 16.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists while shooting 41 percent from 3-point territory in eight games played in the D-League.

The Spurs needed to sign another player after letting Tulsa 66ers forward Larry Owens head back to the D-League upon completion of his second 10-day contract, leaving them with just 12 players on the roster. In seven games with the Spurs, Owens averaged 1.3 points in 4.4 minutes played over the course of seven games.

Kevin Love Selected to All-Star Team as Yao Ming's Replacement

Kevin LoveKevin Love might have been the biggest snub when the reserves were announced for the 2011 NBA All-Star game on Thursday. The league's leading rebounder, Love is averaging 15.5 boards per game, and has pulled down more than 20 in a single game eight times this season.

It took David Stern to fix the glaring omission, and the commissioner did exactly that by naming Love to the Western Conference squad as Yao Ming's replacement.

Love making the team should have been a no-brainer, but the coaches vote for the reserves, and they likely gave Tim Duncan the votes that should have gone to Love -- presumably based on Timmy's body of work, and the fact that the Spurs hold the league's best record at 41-8. LaMarcus Aldridge and Steve Nash were the other top candidates believed to be in the running for Yao's spot.

Video of Love receiving the news in the locker room before Friday night's game can be seen in the clip below.

'First Take: Live With Kevin Smith' streams live Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET on MTVNews.com.

It's strange to think of a guy like Kevin Smith as an underdog. He's a onetime indie filmmaker who long ago broke into mainstream pop culture, the voluble guardian of 1.7 million Twitter followers and a master ringleader able to sell out events at college campus across North America.

And yet an underdog Smith most certainly is, as he attempts to remake the Hollywood distribution model and release his latest feature — the politically charged horror flick "Red State" — himself. It's an audacious plan, one that encountered fury from all corners as soon as he announced it during a scorching, I-ain't-gonna-take-this-crap-anymore speech following the film's Sundance premiere.

In short, 2011 finds Smith in a position unlike any he's occupied since "Clerks" debuted at Sundance in 1994. Where does he go from here? Follow along with MTV News and you'll soon find out.

That's because we're presenting "First Take: Live With Kevin Smith," an hour-long live stream hosted by Josh Horowitz and exclusively airing on MTVNews.com this Tuesday, February 8, at 3 p.m. ET.

The filmmaker has largely avoided the media in the last year, but now he'll be answering all our questions about "Red State," Sundance, the future of his career and much more. He'll be answering your questions too. All you have to do between now and the show is tweet your question with the hashtag #AskKevin. What's more, we'll also be debuting an exclusive clip from "Red State" during the show.

Before Smith heads out on a road-show tour with "Red State" in March, bringing the film to auditoriums around the country, MTVNews.com is the place to hear what Smith has to say and to hit him with your own questions. So tune in Tuesday, February 8, at 3 p.m. ET for "First Take: Live With Kevin Smith."

What will you ask Kevin Smith during Tuesday's live stream? Tweet your questions with the hashtag #AskKevin now!

Snooki And Sway Team Up For MTV News' Grammy Red-Carpet Live Stream!

Hit up MTVNews.com Sunday, February 13, at 6 p.m. ET to see the 'Jersey Shore' starlet chatting live with your favorite artists.

Over the past year, "Jersey Shore" breakout star Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi has gotten used to walking the red carpet. The iconic member of the "Shore" cast will turn the tables this Sunday, though, when she joins MTV's own Sway Calloway at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards.

Instead of working it down the carpet, for the second year in a row, Snooki will be the one asking stars questions. And for the first time, she and co-host Sway will anchor MTV's red-carpet live stream from the event. The pair will be seen live on MTV.com for two hours (6-8 p.m. ET), talking to all the night's big attendees, presenters and performers.

What will she say? We have no idea, but you can bet it won't be the same boring stuff you're hearing on all the other entertainment shows!

"I did do the interviews with the Grammys last year, and I really had no idea what was going on," Snooki admitted to MTV News. "This was all new to me. So now, being in it for a year, I know what to expect. And I'm gonna study a little more [about] what people are up for and who they are. I'm not gonna be like, 'Yo, Kings of Leon, who are you?' That's what I did last year! So I'm definitely gonna study up more."

Things were a little hectic for Snickers last year, as she admittedly didn't know many of the night's stars. (Sorry again, Alice in Chains!) But luckily, plenty of them were well-acquainted with her. Over the course of the evening, she compared pouf-hairstyle secrets with Miley Cyrus, yukked it up with metal icons Judas Priest, got in the middle of an LMFAO sandwich, strained her neck to look up at a towering Katy Perry, made goo-goo eyes at Justin Bieber and nearly got bowled over when Fergie bum-rushed past her Black Eyed Peas cohorts to get a pic with her favorite reality star.

What will Snooki do this year on the carpet? It's anybody's guess, but you know it will be interesting to watch.

Don't miss Snooki and Sway on MTV News' Grammy red-carpet live stream, Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com. And stick with us all night for coverage of the red carpet, the show, the afterparties and beyond!

Video: a Hockey Hole in One

Watch enough hockey and you'll see pucks find a way into weird places.

It's not terribly uncommon for action to stop because one got lodged in a player's equipment, or on the top or bottom of the goal.

However, one wayward puck in Wednesday's game in Pittsburgh between the Penguins and New York Islanders managed to go where not many pucks have gone, or ever will go. A shot by Pittsburgh's Craig Adams glanced off goalie Rick DiPietro's stick, bounced on top of the net, and rolled into the holder for DiPietro's water bottle.

Miami Heat Still Building Chemistry After Rash of Injuries

Mike MillerMIAMI -- With so many injuries this season -- including everything from minor setbacks to their superstar trio to serious injuries that have sidelined Mike Miller and Udonis Haslem for months -- the Miami Heat must once again adjust to a new rotation featuring different roles and varying minutes to core players. Of more concern is that the midway point of the season has already passed and the clock is ticking for a team desperate to establish true chemistry and comfort with each other.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra is happy with the results of late, but there is an undercurrent of apprehension. "We need more time, so the court time is the most important thing right now to build more continuity," he pointed out after the Heat's latest victory at the expense of the Cleveland Cavaliers. "We have 33 games left and we have to fast-track this process."

No sooner was Miller healthy enough to rejoin the rotation and begin the work of carving out a role next to the Big Three when all three of Miami's stars suffered their own health problems. In Miller's first start of the season -- filling in for Dwyane Wade, who sat with migraine issues -- Miller racked up 32 points in a victory over the Toronto Raptors, fueling an impressive comeback performance.
